An evening away

Kurt is such a sweetheart. For our 8th wedding anniversary (13 years together!), he took me to our favorite B&B in the mountains, the Oakmoor Country Inn. We had a wonderful evening in our log cabin retreat just outside Charlottesville, then spent Saturday driving around touring wineries. This seems to have become a tradition with us, as we enjoyed the same experience last year. We visited a couple new vineyards this year, but our favorite is still, by far, Cardinal Point. Their wines are all incredible.

Said the blog author to her friends and fam....

... do you see what I see?

What do you think? Let me give you a little history...

Yippppeeee. We spent quite a bit of time on Wednesday baking and decorating our Christmas cut-out cookies. We had a really good time, with holiday songs playing and the kids making a huge mess.

Well, I came down the next morning and noticed something terribly wrong with our cookies. I am not quite sure what it could be, but the evidence seems to indicate that *something* or *someone* has taken bites out of a few of our cookies.

Hmmmmm.

Kurt and I think it is probably someone (perhaps a small child)who hasn't quite figured out how to cover his tracks yet, and most likely, the one that wasn't in bed early that night.

What do you think?

A REAL DATE

So, this past Friday was awesome. Kurt arranged a date night for us, and by date night, I mean a REAL date.

I dropped the kids off at my parents house and then went home to get dressed. I was supposed to get really dressed up.

Kurt stopped at my parents house after work, got dressed in a brand new suit and put on his new cologne (all surprises for me!) then he stopped and picked up a rose from the florist on the way home.

He was very prompt and PICKED ME UP AT THE DOOR to take me on a date. I can't remember the last time that happened. Probably high school, and even then, I was older than my boyfriend, who couldn't drive. I usually picked him up for dates! I guess prom was the last time I was picked up at my house for a date. :)

Anywho, my neighbor came over to snap a photo of us (thanks again, Rachel) before Kurt surprised me by taking me to my favorite restaurant and then to the ballet to see The Nutcracker. It was so awesome to get dressed up and go out on the town.

I have the BEST husband anyone could ask for.

Very important question...

In my quest to de-clutter my life, it is this kind of thing that drives me crazy. Please leave me a comment to let me know what your solution to my dilemma is...

What do you do with all the tiny zip-lock bags that come with new shirts that have the extra buttons/beads/thread?

Sure, it sounds insignificant, but these are the kinds of things that add up in my home and all of a sudden, I am drowning in tiny button filled zip lock bags!

Hodgepodge of Stuff!

I know, I know. I get it. It has been entirely too long since I posted. For some reason, I can't seem to get my head on straight lately, let alone organize my thoughts and digital photos to post to the blog... but here goes... a recap of the last few weeks... (so, you can stop emailing or telling me to post to my blog!) :)

Thanksgiving was wonderful. We went to Blacksburg to spend the holiday with Kurts family. All the cousins had a blast running in circles and driving the adults bonkers. :) We had a lot of fun at the Children's museum in Roanoke. It was nice to have an outing with Grammy.

Oh, big big news in our home, Poochie had surgery on his tail over Thanksgiving. I am posting some "before" photos here but will have to wait for the "after" photo, as Brody has Poochie in bed right now. He had worn poochies tail down all the way to tatters, so now he has a nice new tail. For a while, Poochie had the old tail and the new one together at the same time, but Brody came to me the other day and asked me to cut the old one off, that "Poochie didn't want it anymore." So, I started to tear up as I cut Poochie's tail off. Crazy. Brody was perfectly fine, but I had a hard time losing the most precious part of Poochie.

The day after we got home from Blacksburg, we went to see Playhouse Disney Live. It really was an awesome show. I tried to snap some good photos, but it was really hard, even though we were really close in the third row. We went with our best friends, Abby and Kim.

A few days later, we took the boys to Richmond to see Santa (the same one I went to see when I was little)and they loved it. Thank the Good Lord that Brody asked for what he did, because there could have been issues if he added one more thing to the list of stuff that has already been acquired, if you know what I mean.

We had a good time hanging out for a little while at the Children's museum... here is a pic of my silly kids.

It is our tradition to go pick out or Christmas tree on our anniversary, so this year, on our EIGHTH wedding anniversary, we went to get the tree. It was FREEZING so there wasn't much time spent outside choosing. We got a good one, though, as usual.
The kids favorite part was just running up and down the rows. I wish I preferred to run everywhere. I am sure I would be in much better shape!

So, now the outside and inside of the house is all decorated (I will take some photos later), the tree is up and decorated, we have watched the Polar Express about 365 times, the Christmas cards are all almost sent, and life is good. I only have 2 more presents that are still being shipped, and other than that, everything is wrapped and waiting for the big day!

We have a Christmas concert at church this Sunday and I am really excited about it. A Christian artist that I have listened to since I was in high school is coming to do a concert with our choir this Sunday. I can't wait to sing with Michael Card! Crazy. He is an amazing talent and I can't believe he will be performing with us at our church! The tickets are completely sold out, so sorry if anyone wanted to come! I will let you know how it went!

One last photo for the grandmoms... we made brownies tonight. Brody helped. :)

A Perfect Day

There is NOTHING like a 75 degree day in the middle of November to lift your spirits. We went to lunch at the park with some friends. And then the kids took a BIG nap!

We plan to make it a regular Wednesday lunch date, which I need so bad!

More Family Photos

Here are even MORE photos of my family!

:)

Charlotte, you are so awesome!

cant...keep....treading.....water.....going.....down

I can barely breathe sometimes when I look around my house. In a matter of an hour, literally, our house can explode.

I am in a continual state of picking up and cleaning. It doesn't end, especially with the kids. But, I am not talking about their clutter right now. At least we have a place for their clutter, I know where to put the toys away.

I am just talking about the adult clutter. We try desperately to keep on top of it; throwing away junk mail as it comes into our house, having a place for everything, using the "one touch rule", donating regularly. But still, even with all of that effort, we just have lots of STUFF. It is this STUFF that makes me feel like I am drowning.

Today, I started going around the house, doing the usual de-junk process. As I am in the middle of this process, the doorbell rings. I go to see who it is, and there is bag hanging on our door handle. Inside this bag is... junk. Someone has just hand delivered a bag of junk to my door. Literally. The Chesapeake Health Department has given me

1. One plastic bag
2. A newspaper telling me that "Anthrax has been distributed in the air throughout the Hampton Roads Area." All over this paper is written "This is only an exercise - There is no emergency"
3. A "Mass Antibiotic Distribution Drill" paper telling me that there is no emergency and no threat to Chesapeake.
4. Another "Sample emergency medical information sheet" paper saying this is only a drill and that I don't need to do anything
5. Four empty pill bottles for the emergency that is not occurring.

Seriously. I just got hand delivered more stuff that I am told I do not need. I can't imagine how much this cost Chesapeake to deliver these to each person. Did we really need a trial run, or could we have just gotten a note telling us what WOULD happen if there really was an emergency? Or better yet, just wait until there actually was an emergency and then sent me this package.

What am I supposed to do with this stuff? Save it for future reference? Throw it away?

*sigh*

If I don't post for a while, it is because I am lost under the useless, unnecessary junk in my home.

How to make Jen cry:

Take photos like this if the most important people in her life!

click for our family photos by Charlotte Geary

Charlotte, you are truly a blessing to us. These photos are something that will forever remind us of the love our family has for each other. You have captured these boys more than you even know you have.

For instance, did you know you got "Brody's kick" in there? Or "Seth's concentration face"? Or that the "Poochie stance" is now captured for all eternity?

*sigh*

You can't measure the worth of these photos and I am truly grateful to you.

teary eyed,
Jen

SIGH OF RELIEF

It is so exciting to get your kids school picture back and have it look like this...

Monday, October 29, 2007

I'm so, so sorry to report...

This is the latest from my old church regarding the little girl who fell into the swimming pool at her babysitters house:

Natalie West died early this evening in Portsmouth. About two dozen members of her family and friends gathered at the hospital to say good-bye to this precious little bundle of joy. Natalie’s body fought hard over the past few days to overcome the effects of her accidental drowning, but she is now mercifully at peace.

Prayers were lifted up for fourteen-month-old Natalie and her family all over the world – a Navy Chaplain shared with me that one church in El Salvador maintained a twenty-four hour prayer vigil. Fellow church members, friends, the U. S. Navy, and the wonderful staff at the Naval hospital have given the family continual support throughout this struggle. The family thanks you for every prayer, every note of support, and every offer of aid.

Services for Natalie are being planned and as soon as the arrangements are complete an email will be sent. Should a reception be included, Aldersgate members will be invited to share food. Several of our members are currently coordinating dinners for the West family from tomorrow, the 30th through Tuesday the 6th of November. If you would like to help with food for either a reception or these daily meals, please respond to this email (include your phone number) and your name will be shared with the coordinators.

If you go to www.caringbridge.org you can leave a message of sympathy for the family. Please note that the family has not had an opportunity to update the website since Saturday, so as of 8 p.m. this evening, the homepage message is not current.

This is such an overwhelming, heart-breaking mystery and the why’s seem incomprehensible. The 77th Psalm says “though your footprints were not seen, You led your people like a flock.” Please continue to pray for Hillary, Bryan, and Natalie’s big sister Emily and all their extended family, that they will feel the comforting presence of God, even in those moments when His footsteps are not seen.

I thought I would share a video that a friend shared with me, and if any of you have a pool, your child visits a home with a pool, or if you frequent a lake or any open body of water, this seems to be an invaluable service.

Busy Busy Week

Other than all the Halloween Shananigans, we are going camping this weekend for the first time with the kids. Kurt and I used to camp often, even when I was pregnant with Brody, but after that, it just seemed like it would be such a hassle.

Well, we have decided to give it a shot, so here is my question...

anybody know any good recipes that you can cook over an open campfire? I would love to make something really surprising and something kid-friendly.

:)

Prayers Needed

This is a message from our old church. Please pray for this family...

Please keep 14-month-old Natalie West in your prayers. Natalie fell into the swimming pool at her baby-sitter’s home yesterday and is currently in critical but stable condition at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. It is unknown how long she was in the water and the physicians are being extremely cautious in making any predictions about her recovery.

Natalie’s mother, Hillary, is appreciative of every prayer lifted on Natalie’s behalf and I know God is calming her heart in the midst of her anguish.

Natalie’s father Bryan is flying home from Iraq where he has been deployed. Friends of the family are caring for Natalie’s older sister, Emily.

Please keep the entire family in your prayers for healing, for travel mercies, and for strength and faith during this critical time.

What a difference a year can make

Okay, so normally I don't post photos of myself. First off, I am nowhere near as cute as my kids, but secondly, my looks change so drastically from one year to the next that I am not quite sure what I look like, but these photos were so amazing to me that I had to share.

As my self esteem rises and falls, I can definitely see how that is reflected in how I look. I am on an upswing right now. :) I seem to be coming back around to what I used to look like through high school and on and off in college.

Last year at this same time, we had our team photos taken. We went again today... look at the difference in what I look like in ONE YEAR. I have lost some of the weight from my last pregnancy, grown out the locks, and returned to my blond identity (which actually isn't my natural color anymore. believe it or not, the brown is!)

Crazy. Poor Kurt, it must be impossible for him to keep up! And God Bless him for loving me through all my chameleon ways! :)

no more myspace

Okay, so after only having a myspace account for less than a week, I cancelled my account. I had received requests for people to add me as their friend for lewd and disgusting reasons.

Also, I had people sending me completely inappropriate comments about how good I looked, etc...

So... I don't need that in my life.

moving on....

although, if any of you normal friends out there would like to tell me how good I look. that is always welcome. ;)

A Gazillion Photos!

What an awesome weekend! A very, very dear friend of mine, Charlotte Geary, came to visit for a couple of days. While she was here, she shot some family photos for me and my whole family (my parents... my sister... etc...)

While she was here, we talked (and laughed A LOT) about friends and the people that really know who you are. Charlotte has been one of my greatest friends and I am sure we will always be friends. Whenever we see each other, we fall right back into our friendship and there is usually a lot of giggling and reminiscing.

She and I were in the Annandale High School colorguard together (we were co-captains). We double-dated for a whole year with our boyfriends (which in high school is no small feat!). We stayed friends through college. She was at my bachelorette weekend. We were officemates together (where we can belt out a MEAN Moulin Rouge song at 2am, while riding scooters and pogo sticks). And now, even though we have both moved away from Northern Virginia, she is one of my friends that probably knows me best, because she knows who I have been, who I am now, and will know who I become.

It is a joy to have friends like Charlotte! :o)

Thanks for a wonderful weekend Char, and I can't wait to see some of the photos! I am sure they will be stunning!

If you would like to see Charlotte's work, her link is that right side of my blog. Her photography is incredible.

Pantry Update

You all should be so proud! I am working through the pantry and have made dinner every night WITHOUT going to buy anything new!

I am determined to get it down to what we actually eat.

You all have been holding out on me!

Okay, so being a WAHM (work-at-home-mom) has, on occasion, made me feel completely disconnected from the world. Kurt will come home from work and ask me if I have heard about some big news story (and I mean BIG) and I will have no idea that anything had happened. On top of that, other than my really close friends and the occasional comment on this blog, I am sort of disconnected from my old friends.

Well...

Thank God for Tony, because he invited me into FaceBook tonight. I am sure this is something everyone has known about for ages, but in my world, if it doesn't have to do with Curious George, Blues Clues, or Hot Wheels, I don't know it exists. As I started searching around, I saw ALL THESE OLD AND DEAR FRIENDS... from high school, from college, drum corps, performing groups, and from EVERY job that I have had!

Then, because it has been so long since I had chatted with so many of those people, I felt silly sending them a friend request. So I didn't. Which leaves me with this question...

What is the protocol there? Are you supposed to write a message to go along with your request, or do you just hit the friend request and wait to hear back!

Well, thanks so much Tony for looking out for my well being! I am starting to feel like my old self again, a little at a time!

:)

And in case anyone is interested, this is my facebook profile (you may have to sign up, and you should. it is way cool):

Need a pick-me-up?

Okay, so if you are ever feeling a little stressed out about your life, go ahead and go to www.myspace.com. I think this must be the equivalent of going to an amusement park, as in you start mingling with the types of people that you may not ordinarily spend any time with.

I just saw more cussing, lude gestures, ccomplete disregard for grammar, warped sense of self, disgusting sex references, etc... than I think I have ever taken in at one time.

Don't get me wrong, I think everyone is entitled to express themselves in any way they would like. I just know my kids won't be surfing around on myspace when they are older.

Just looking at the graduates from my high school, people I even remember, made me sick to my stomach. What is happening to this world? When it is the minority to see nice photos of people talking about a nice life with a spouse and kids and a job, something is definitely wrong with our world. *sigh* Just imagine what this place was intended to be like, if it weren't for original sin.

Anyway, if you have kids that are old enough to have their own myspace account, be sure to read the profiles of the people they associate with. What a scary world.

And don't go looking for your friends from high school. It may just make you very sad. :(

But, if anyone is interested... I did create a profile... www.myspace.com/senjockton

The BBB

Seth has moved into his
Big Boy Bed!

What a big milestone!
:)

Confession Time

Okay. This is a little embarrassing, but I plan on writing it all out anyway. I work from home and take care of the kids each day. Most days, I do not make anything for dinner and we end up going out to get something, ordering in, or just snacking (so sad). My main excuse (other than no time)is that we don't have anything in the house to eat.

*sigh*

So, to debunk my own excuse, I decided to document everything (well, almost everything) that is in my pantry. My intention is to CLEAN OUT the pantry, not by having to throw things away because they have been there too long, but by making meals with it and actually eating the food that we have bought! Then, I would like to repopulate it with only the things we eat.

Here is the confession part... we eat out entirely too much and throw away a lot of food in our fridge/pantry because we don't eat it. How warped is that mentality? Animal dies and becomes food... I buy the food... I am lazy and don't want to fix anything... we pay MORE money to eat out... I throw out the food when it goes bad. Some times, I make dinner and we have lots of leftovers, but because I am not in the mood to have it again, we end up throwing it away. SUCH A WASTE! I can't imagine how much money we throw away, let alone animals that died and we just threw the meat out when we didn't eat it in time.

I don't expect you all to actually read all of this, but just to be thorough, THIS is what is in my pantry at the moment (I didn't include all the spices and coffee/teas):

Wish us luck!

Yay! Fall!

Our house is all decked out with lights and glowing ghosts and we have six new mums! It must be fall!

(I love that you can see Kurt and I in the reflection of the door. I think parents trying to get kids to smile in photos is actually more fun than the kids themselves!)

mmmmmm......

Now tell me, really, what kid doesn't LOVE home made chocolate chip cookies warm from the oven?

:)

In my effort to capture some childhood glee, Brody and I made cookies today. Seth helped us enjoy them.

Where has all the laughter gone?

So, as I am driving in my car yesterday, I had this very sad realization...

When I was younger, high-school/college, I remember being with my friends, doing really silly/crazy stuff, having lots of inside jokes, and laughing every time we were together. And, I don't mean just giggling, I remember laughing so hard you would cry and your stomach would hurt.

Then it hit me, I don't think I laugh everyday anymore. I smile, I am happy, I think things are funny and I laugh sometimes, but I RARELY laugh so hard that my stomach hurts.

Is this just a part of growing up? Is there just too much responsibility and too much on my ToDo list that I am not finding the great humor in things as I once did?

I am not sure if I am just in a funk, or if I have gotten too serious in this life, but I want to get back to having milk come out of my nose, getting the hiccups from giggling, and laughing with my friends and family EVERY DAY.

Any suggestions?

School Picture Day age 3!

Amazing Creepy Crawlies

Okay, so I hate bugs. I hate them, but am also fascinated by them. I can get stuck looking at bugs online for entirely too long, which just happened to me. Here is a link with some INCREDIBLE bugs...

http://www.bugman123.com/Bugs/Bugs.html

WHAT is THAT?

Okay, so not only do we have humongo spiders at our house, we found this flying creature on our ceiling tonight. It is about 2 inches long. We took it outside and I snapped some photos before it flew away. Anybody know what this thing is?

Jesus, and his old pal, Cap'n Crunch

Let me preface this by telling you that the Food Lion near my house (yes, .75 miles away) was out of Cap'n Crunch the last time we went. It didn't go over too well with Brody.

Today, in the car, I heard Brody talking to (what I thought was) himself in the back seat. When I asked him what he was saying, he told me he was praying to Jesus. I asked him what he was saying to Jesus.

Brody has prayed to Jesus that Jesus would "come down and put more Cap'n Crunch cereal in the store".

At least he is turning to the Lord when he "needs" him, huh?

;)

The AIG ad

Seth and I were watching golf the other day and there was this ad for AIG. Seth had me rewind it about 20 times. I recorded it and we still watch it. Here is the link for the ad.

The whole video can be found on You Tube here.

Too cute.

Someone save me from myself!

I picked the kids up today from daycare/school and then stopped at the Food Lion to pick up some stuff for dinner. Just for kicks, I set the odometer at 0 when I left the store to see how far it is to our house. Door to door it is... .7 miles! 3/4 of a mile! Not a mile! Do you know how many times I have jumped in the car to go LESS THAN A MILE to pick up something from the store?

So, I had this exciting little moment where I pictured myself walking to the store whenever I needed to get something, getting exercise, having time with my kids, being outside, etc...

...and then the excuses set in...

1. How do I walk a 1 and a 3 year old to the store and then be able to carry back all the groceries?
2. How do I get things like milk/eggs back without spoiling?
3. How hot is too hot to have my kids walking/riding that far?
4. How do I manage bags, stroller, and a 3 year old that likes to randomly run off?

I REALLY want to be able to just walk to the store and I would love for someone out there to invalidate all of my excuses!

Myrtle Beach, SC

We just got back from the beach. Sorry to be so long without a post. I am going through my 700+ photos and will post just a few. I promise, just a few. :) Here is one to start, though. We got up most mornings before the rest of the family and headed down to the beach to collect sea shells. It was nice to see the sunrise with all my boys!

Water,water, everywhere

I am always envious of the people that prefer water to drink. I have never liked to drink water. I would much rather have a Diet Caffeine Free Coke. In fact, I have noticed that there are days I will drink 4 cans of it while around the house. Sad.

So... I have made a COMPLETELY CRAZY pact with myself, and now, with all of you since I am admitting it in public.

Starting this past 9/11, I am ONLY DRINKING WATER for a full year. And not the carbonated and flavored water that I like from WalMart, plain water. This freaks me out but I can't imagine how much healthier I will be cutting out the soda and drinking that much water.

It is much cheaper (unless you buy bottled, which we don't usually) and is supposed to be the best thing to put into your body.

So... off we go. This is day 4 and so far so good! I have to admit, though, I do miss carbonation! And I am sure a glass of wine every now and then will be missed as well!

Beach in 2 days!

We are off to the beach in 2 days! Brody finally *Gets It* that we will all be going away to go to another house and go to the beach. He wants to go now. Is it now? Now?

I am in the process of trying to pack up everything that we own. Apparently, we won't have enough Jeep space, so I am going to have to figure out what is *really* necessary, and what is only a by-product of my "be prepared for anything" mentality.

Thursday, September 06, 2007

Yep. I give up.

I should have stopped at 2. Because NOW, most of the celebrities that this thing says I look like are dudes! And again, there are NO repeats from my first 2 attempts. What do you all think... which one of the slew of celebs do you think I look like? be nice.

Celebrity Look Alikes #2

Okay, so I posted the Celebrity look-alikes thingy and didn't really think I looked like any of the people... so I chalked it up to the face recognition software not being too good... but THEN I saw my friends Rachel and Sam had each done one and they looked JUST LIKE THEM! So I thought I would redo it with a better photo... and I STILL don't think I look like any of these people... AND the funny thing... NONE of the original people showed up on my second attempt. And don't even get me started that Gary Sinise is the 2nd closest to being my match.

Maybe I should go for the best out of 3? Or maybe I should just face the facts that I just don't have celeb looks, except for Gary Sinise!

Kiss My Grits!

Kurt can attest to this... I can't get this song out of my head!!!!! Anybody else remember this show? I LOVED it!

Oh, and here is the opening video if you are interested!

My Celebrity Look-alikes

I saw this on my friend's blog, so I thought I would try it out. If only I ACTUALLY looked like any of these people...

Oh, and here's Kurts!

First Day of School!
