Ripe For The Pickin'

We met up with some of Brody's classmates and their siblings this morning to pick some strawberries. It was cloudy and wet, but we still had fun. The kids really enjoyed it, especially because they had the opportunity to get SUPER DIRTY. Getting the kids to leave was no fun, but hey, you can't ask for everything!

Throwing The Little Ones Back In

The YMCA right down the street from us is huge. It is a great gym with lots of great classes, and the BEST part... they are opening an outdoor pool/water park in a week! It has a water park play area with shooting water, a little kids play pool with slide and cute stuff, and an adult swimming pool. I can't wait! Almost all of my friends are also members of the Y so we are planning on getting together quite a bit over the summer at the pool.

So, in getting ready for the summer, Brody is back in swim lessons. He has a really hard time paying attention and listening during class because all he wants to do is play. I wonder if one-on-one lessons may be better for him to help him focus.

A really cool thing, the little girl that lives literally right behind our house is in his class!

I Am Free

We listen to Christian Radio stations about 95% of the time while in the car, and it just amazes me how many songs Brody has learned, without my even knowing it. Tonight, he was just sitting there and starting singing a song that we do with the windows down and the volume cranked up.

Here we are:

I Am Free

There are few things that compare to your child singing to God at the top of his lungs. *sigh* :)

Car Update

For those of you who were kind enough to ask, the car is back. It was just a battery! ;)

My Favorite Blog

I was talking to a friend of mine, good1sgoodies, at church last night about blogging. I told her about my favorite blog but thought I would also post it here. This woman is hysterical.

Here is her blog... mom2my6pack

and here is my favorite post... Adventures in Grocery Shopping

I find as a Work-at-Home-Mom that I usually feel disconnected from the world. It is nice to have a blogging community, where we can all read about each others ordeals and lives. It really makes me feel more normal!

So to all you blogging mommies out there, keep it up!

On Being a Parent

This has been through my email inbox a few times, but every time I read it, I am reminded again...

On Being A Parent
by Anna Quindlen

If not for the photographs, I might have a hard time believing they ever existed. The pensive infant with the swipe of dark bangs and the blackbutton eyes of a Raggedy Andy doll. The placid baby with the yellow ringlets and the high piping voice. The sturdy toddler with the lower lip that curled into an apostrophe above her chin.

ALL MY BABIES are gone now. I say this not in sorrow but in disbelief. I take great satisfaction in what I have today: three almost adults, two taller than I am, one closing in fast. Three people who read the same books I do and have learned not to be afraid of disagreeing with me in their opinion of them, who sometimes tell vulgar jokes that make me laugh until I choke and cry, who need razor blades and shower gel and privacy, who want to keep their doors closed more than I like. Who, miraculously, go to the bathroom, zip up their jackets and move food from plate to mouth all by themselves. Like the trick soap I bought for the bathroom with a rubber ducky at its center, the baby is buried deep within each, barely discernible except through the unreliable haze of the past.

Everything in all the books I once pored over is finished for me now. Penelope Leach., T. Berry Brazelton., Dr. Spock. The ones on sibling rivalry and sleeping through the night and early-childhood education, all grown obsolete. Along with Goodnight Moon and Where the Wild Things Are, they are battered, spotted, well used. But I suspect that if you flipped the pages dust would rise like memories.

What those books taught me, finally, and what the women on the playground taught me, and the well-meaning relations --what they taught me was that they couldn't really teach me very much at all.

Raising children is presented at first as a true-false test, then becomes multiple choice, until finally, far along, you realize that it is an endless essay. No one knows anything. One child responds well to positive reinforcement, another can be managed only with a stern voice and a timeout. One boy is toilet trained at 3, his brother at 2. When my first child was born, parents were told to put baby to bed on his belly so that he would not choke on his own spit-up. By the time my last arrived, babies were put down on their backs because of research on sudden infant death syndrome. To a new parent this ever-shifting certainty is terrifying, and then soothing. Eventually you must learn to trust yourself. Eventually the research will follow.

I remember 15 years ago poring over one of Dr. Brazelton's wonderful books on child development, in which he describes three different sorts of infants: average, quiet, and active. I was looking for a sub-quiet codicil for an 18-month-old who did not walk. Was there something wrong with his fat little legs? Was there something wrong with his tiny little mind? Was he developmentally delayed, physically challenged? Was I insane? Last year he went to China. Next year he goes to college. He can talk just fine. He can walk, too.

Every part of raising children is humbling, too. Believe me, mistakes were made. They have all been enshrined in the Remember-When-Mom-Did Hall of Fame. The outbursts, the temper tantrums, the bad language-mine, not theirs. The times the baby fell off the bed. The times I arrived late for preschool pickup. The nightmare sleepover. The horrible summer camp. The day when the youngest came barreling out of the classroom with a 98 on her geography test, and I responded, What did you get wrong? (She insisted I include that.) The time I ordered food at the McDonald's drive-through speaker and then drove away without picking it up from the window. (They all insisted I include that.) I did not allow them to watch the Simpsons for the first two seasons. What was I thinking?

But the biggest mistake I made is the one that most of us make while doing this. I did not live in the moment enough. This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of the three of them sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages 6, 4 and 1. And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night. I wish I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed. I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less.

Even today I'm not sure what worked and what didn't, what was me and what was simply life. When they were very small, I suppose I thought someday they would become who they were because of what I'd done. Now I suspect they simply grew into their true selves because they demanded in a thousand ways that I back off and let them be. The books said to be relaxed and I was often tense, matter-of-fact and I was sometimes over the top. And look how it all turned out. I wound up with the three people I like best in the world, who have done more than anyone to excavate my essential humanity. That's what the books never told me. I was bound and determined to learn from the experts.

It just took me a while to figure out who the experts were.

I saw this commercial on tv today and laughed out loud. This is my life in a nutshell.

Phantom Cyclone

All of the toilet paper rolls in our house end up looking like this every now and then. Must be some strange cyclone phenomenon. Anyone else also have this nice designer look in your bathrooms?

Welcome Baby S

A good friend of ours just had her baby. He is perfect! Congratulations!

Random Zonk

Poor Seth, he has been feeling so awful with this Strep Throat. I know he is definitely sick when I find him zonked out all over the house.

Seth is Black and Blue!

Seth is on FIRE with the potty training!! We have put about ZERO effort into potty training this kid, as opposed to Brody, which was a huge big long drawn out ordeal!! I am ECSTATIC, as you can tell by the multiple ALL CAPS and Exclamation Points!!!!

The funny thing, though, is that they have something in common. We bribe our kids to go in the potty with M&Ms. :) 2 for peepee and 4 for the other stuff. (Yes, I know. We are pretty generous with the M&Ms).

Anywho, both of our kids wanted Black(Brown) and Blue M&Ms for their "reward". So strange to me, as there are so many nice colors to choose from. I wonder if there is a study of colors and what it says about my kids that they both independently chose Brown and Blue as the colors they wanted.

Happy Monday to Me!

Yeah. Not such a great start to my week. At least it is raining and we wouldn't have wanted to go out anywhere anyway! Thank you, Thank you Rachel for letting me take Brody to school in your car!

Pray for a quick and inexpensive fix!

Peeping In

If you sat in the cul de sac in front of my house and looked in at our front windows, you would think all I do is clean laundry and walk it up the stairs.

Having your laundry room on the same floor as your bedroom is definitely NOT over-rated. I am so envious.

Anyone want to do some free architectural work in my house? Pretty please? :o} I would even settle for a pulley system!

Can't Get It Simple Enough

I can't get rid of my stuff. I am not emotionally attached to it, but for some reason, I can't seem to get rid of all the clutter around my house.

We have a neighborhood yard sale coming up early next month and for the past, hmmm... say FOUR YEARS, I have been planning on selling stuff in the yard sale. They have this sale every year, but each year we just don't seem to get ourselves together enough to participate.

So, the stuff just keeps adding up. Now, here I am again. I am completely overwhelmed, have no idea how to get ready for a yard sale, not a clue how to price things or arrange things, but the yard sale is looming.

I was talking with a friend the other night who is a yard sale fanatic. I asked her for advice on how to throw a yard sale. It may have been a mistake. She is so organized that she has things ready all throughout the year... hanging on hangers... tagged... brand names written on the tags, as well as the condition of the piece... priced... just ready to go. She has like 6 tables she uses and a few really nice rods that she hangs the clothes on. She has tents, for Lordy sake! I am very impressed with her organization, but to put it mildly, my level of organization at this point is this... if an item has already made it to the garage, I feel overjoyed! It is still dusty, dirty, not priced, all the pieces aren't there with it, but hey.. it is IN THE GARAGE.

So, I am feeling overwhelmed. Does anyone have any advice as to how a NORMAL, AVERAGE person should prepare for a garage sale? I don't have any money to buy lots of things for the sale, so anything the dollar store offers would be helpful!

Happy Mothers Day!

I woke this morning to a 4 year old child putting flowers in my nose. :) Then, my wonderful husband placed a tray of pancakes on my lap. Very quickly after that, the 4 year old took a bite of my pancake and asked to have a sip of my orange juice. And my milk. :)

It is so wonderful to be a mommy! I decided that I didn't want to eat all by myself in bed, so we carried the tray back downstairs to eat together, where my 2 year old brought me a card, said he loved me, and said "Happy Mothers Day". *sigh* It is about all my heart can take. Truly wonderful.

I hope all you mommies have a blessed day and can focus on what an incredible miracle your children are, and the responsibility that God has blessed you with to raise His children. My house may be a mess, Post-it may be coming to do experiments on my kitchen floor because it is stickier than any of their products, but all is well. I am blessed to be a mommy.

And I can always get to cleaning the floor when they are teenagers! :)

Go Forth Brave Child

We went to Busch Gardens late last night for our first time this season. My parents always give us our Busch Gardens season passes for our birthdays (Thank you again Mimi and PaChuck!), so we usually go in the evenings for a couple of hours. It is much easier than taking the 2 kids for a full day at the park. Having season passes takes a lot of the pressure off to get everything done, go to all the shows, and ride all the rides while you are there.

It was one of the most pleasant evenings we have ever had as a family. Both boys were good listeners, stayed right with us, there was no crankiness, no defiance, just a lot of fun. Kurt and I both left as the happiest versions of ourselves. :)

On top of that, Brody is finally old and daring enough to start riding some "grown up rides". Last night he rode the Log Flume twice and the Battering Ram! He was so proud of himself! He wasn't too sure how he felt about the Battering Ram, but said he loved it after it was over. It was so fun to actually go on rides with him, too! We were so delighted. He was most proud because he didn't scream on any of the rides because he is so brave! :) Maybe we can get him on The Big Bad Wolf by the end of the season! :)

It was a great way to spend my Mothers Day eve. Oh, and Seth went in the potty at the park. Crazy! Happy Mothers Day to me!

The Painted Lady

It has become our tradition that we take my mom out for tea in honor of her being our mom and all. So, today, we went out for Afternoon Tea. We ate entirely too much, drank much tea, and had a nice time at The Painted Lady.

Happy Mothers Day mom, and to you too, Sharon, way over there in Blacksburg! I love you both so much!

Diaper Free Zone

Judging by the looks of things, we may be a diaper free house within the next few days. Seth has started going in the potty, almost exclusively.

He went 3 times last night, has already gone 3 times today.

I was sitting at the computer finishing up some work and I heard him dragging something, which I thought was a chair, into the office. I turn around and he has dragged his potty in for me to see. He was so proud of his peepee!

I CANT WAIT to be done with diapers, at least for the time being!!!

Playdate for the *kids*

Being that it was Friday and our kids don't have school on Friday, a few of the class moms decided to get our kids together at a new place called Our Runaround. This place is about 3 minutes from our house and we had never been there! They were really great. Since we were there at lunchtime, they let us order pizzas, buy some juice boxes and sodas from them, and use their party room for lunch. They even cleaned up for us!

The kids had a ball, and so did our children! (The big slide was my favorite!)

:o}

Parents Picnic

Today was one of those days that you look at your kid and think, "Who are you, little boy? Where has my little baby gone?"

It was the Parent's Picnic at Brody's preschool today. It was drizzling outside, so they had it in "The Running Room", which is Brody's favorite part of school, go figure.

They combined the celebration for Mother's and Father's Day, we all brought a blanket and picnic, ate with all the families and with our kids, we were sung to... there was dancing... and running around... and gifts for the parents. It truly was heart warming.

We sat with some of Brody's best friends, and as we were there, it hit me... Brody is getting old. I watched him with his friends and even had the thought that he is old enough to have friends that he has chosen himself! He has a class of 15 and there are a few of them that really like to hang out together. I had nothing to do with it... these are HIS friends. It was so strange to think of that. They are super cute kids, so he definitely has good taste! :)

He is just about to finish his 2nd full year of preschool and it amazes me how intelligent he has become in that time. He has learned so much there, but mostly he has just learned how to control himself, how to listen, how to behave, etc... He knows his whole alphabet and numbers, colors, shapes, seasons, days of the week, can write his name, and he is even learning to read quite a bit, but it is mostly how mature he is that makes me realize how quickly time is flying! I know next year will be incredible to see how far his brain goes!

Here he is with some of his friends and with his teachers.

*sigh*

Look out College, here we come! ;)

Brody made Kurt a necktie to wear and a necklace for me!

Here is the whole family at our indoor picnic

Here are the boys. Tell me they aren't going to break some hearts in high school!

Silly, as usual

Here is Ms. Sally, Brody, Mary Kendall (Brody's little sweetie) and Ms. Ann.

Feeling Great!

It is such a treat to wake up that first day after you have been taking antibiotics and have NO PAIN in your throat! This was a killer episode with strep throat. It was super painful and took WAY TOO LONG to start going away!

Hand sanitizer, anyone?

Strep Throat

*sigh*

I have strep throat. again. I caught it either from my poor nephew or from someone else at his birthday party, which was at Kangaroo Jacks, which makes it pretty amazing that we aren't all walking around with different viruses right now!

I slacked for the first day and didn't go to the doctor. Then, the next morning when I was desperate, my doctor couldn't see me until late afternoon. So, after that appointment and then waiting at Walgreens for 40 minutes, I was able to start meds. I have just finished taking the first day of antibiotics, and usually, I am feeling a real difference by this time. Not so much now. I still can't swallow and have a slight fever, although it has gone down. I have to take 3 pills a day for 10 days, and if that doesn't work, the doctor says to come back. TEN DAYS?! I tell you what... if these pills aren't working in THREE days, I am going back... and I will only wait that long because it is the weekend!

Strep throat is just miserable.

And you know what I have noticed? Being an adult and being sick is just awful. The laundry still needs to be done... You still have work you have to do... The kids still fight and spill things and find every way possible to keep you from actually being able to lay down for 5 minutes, and no matter how old you are, you still want someone to take care of you when you are sick. It isn't fun being the mommy when all you want is your own mommy! (thanks mimi for all you did for me yesterday and for the last 35 years of strep throat!)

Someone eat something really hard and scratchy, like chips, just for me! I'm tired of pudding and ice cream.

High Up In the Trees

Brody hit a huge childhood milestone today! He started climbing trees! I have LOTS of memories climbing the front tree of my house when I was growing up. I wonder if he will have the same of our front tree? I was so proud of him, even though I am sure we will have a trip to the emergency room with a broken arm sometime in the future!

Boys Will Be Boys

Although Brody and Seth actually enjoy this and think it is funny... I have noticed that they (maybe all brothers in the world) can turn anything into a brawl. *sigh* At least they were laughing and this one didn't end in tears.

For Those Who Don't Believe Me

Many of my friends can't believe that Seth ever gives us any problems. He, for the most part, is incredibly sweet and loving. But, he does have his moments. Here we are, after about 20 minutes of telling him he had to take just 1, yes ONE, bite of his dinner before he could get down. The whole ordeal lasted half an hour when WE finally won and he took a bite of dinner! 10 points for the parents!

A word of encouragement to all you mommies and daddies... DON'T GIVE IN! No matter how much it breaks your heart to see your kid crying about a bite of spaghetti, you will feel so much better in the end when you actually see him take that bite and then run off to play as if nothing had happened!

Pop Rock On!

Remember pop rocks?
Thrilling, huh?

Evan had a birthday
party this weekend
and gave lollipops
that you dip in pop
rocks as one of his
favors.

Brody obviously
enjoyed it...

Go Ahead ~ Air Out Your Dirty Floors

I hope you aren't the squeemish type. If so, just close your browser now.

You can pretty much tell what went on during our day by the dirt on our kitchen floors. I am completely embarrassed to admit that this dirt is from ONE DAY in our house. Really. I swept this morning, and then this is just from today...

Can you see the clues? Cheerios for breakfast. Stopped at the bank and got lollipops. Crackers and peanut butter for lunch. Some Peanut Butter Captain crunch for a small snack. Played with red and blue play dough. Kids pulled out their easter baskets from the closet, complete with the clear cellophane grass. Seth peeled apart a green crayon. Swept with an old broom that is shedding.

Pretty scary, huh?

BTW, all of you gasping at the amount of dirt in my house, I can loan you two small kids if you would like to do your own experiment in your house! :)
